Europe is currently at a point of unprecedented change in healthcare, with the global eco-nomic crisis, an ageing population, and the advances being made in available technology. Those professionals planning healthcare systems of the future, face challenges unforeseen previously if they are to significantly reduce health inequalities. However, access to quality healthcare is only part of the means by which we need to address health inequalities, since there is ample evidence to suggest that much health inequality is socially determined.

This three day workshop aims to explore ways of improving population health and reduc-ing health inequalities through two different approaches.

  • Days 1 & 2 will examine current and future health issues in relation to strategic health care planning from a public health perspective and explore models of commissioning and provision for the future of healthcare, including the importance of moving beyond a hospital centric model of care.

  • Day 3 will examine the opportunities for using European funding as a means of reduc-ing health inequalities through the application of evidence based social interventions.

  • The sessions will include presentations, supported by group participation, enabling partici-pants to apply theory to practice.

Translating Research into Policy and Practice
    Location: Ottawa, Ontario (Canada)
    Date(s): February 07, 2011 - February 08, 2011
    Website: Click for further information
Affiliated organization/sponsor(s): University of Ottawa, Centre for Continuing Education

Today’s researchers understand it’s no longer good enough to do the research, write up the results and present them at a conference of like-minded peers. You have to get your work out of the ivory tower and into the hands and minds of those who will use it to shape emerging policies and practices. What’s more, the increasing speed of global change means this process of knowledge translation, transfer or exchange has to happen quickly and continuously so that research can be used before its shelf life expires.

During this two-day workshop, you will find out how to collaborate with stakeholders, policymakers and practitioners to build their considerations into your research program before you even begin. You will learn how to develop comprehensive research-use strategies and plain language communication products to position your findings for the greatest impact. You will move beyond the “publish or perish” tradition toward fostering the relationships and networks often required to develop cross-sectoral solutions to multi-faceted problems. And you will begin to see how the feedback gathered from partners will help ensure your research remains relevant over time.

Research to Practice: Translation in Public Health Systems and Services Research
    Location: Online
    Date(s): December 16, 2010
    Website: Click for further information
Affiliated organization/sponsor(s): School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota

For research to influence the practice of public health, its findings must be relevant for those in the field. Designing research questions in partnership with practitioners, who have their pulse on public health’s most pressing needs, can help ensure relevance. Similarly, conducting research with practice partners, and sharing findings with those who can use them, supports the implementation of evidence-based and innovative public health practice.

As the field of Public Health Systems and Services Research (PHSSR) grows, it must adopt methods and strategies to translate findings in a way that resonates with key stakeholders, particularly those who conduct the business of public health.

This webinar focuses on two examples of translation in PHSSR. William Riley, Ph.D., associate dean for the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, will discuss his work developing a pilot program to expand the use of continuous quality improvement (CQI) principles to public health agencies, with a focus on reducing health disparities. Danielle Varda, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado, will discuss her research examining partnerships in public health. In response, the researcher’s practice partners will discuss their experience working with the investigators, describe the research’s relevance for the field, and give suggestions for translating findings.

Decision-making in the public health sector is complex. There are often uncertainties regarding the effectiveness of projects, programs, and policies to solve public health problems. In addition, there is often no consensus among the population, or among experts and decision-makers, about the best course of action. Deliberative processes can support decision-making by creating a dialogue between the various stakeholders to critically examine an issue and come to a rationally-motivated agreement.

The objective of this one-day conference is to inform public health professionals and decision-makers about the use of deliberative processes to inform decision-making.

This workshop will be bilingual and simultaneous translation will be provided.

Getting to Uptake: Leveraging Social Innovation for Practice Change

    Date(s): September 23, 2009
    Website: Click for further information
Affiliated organization/sponsor(s): The Community Health Systems Resource Group, Hospital for Sick Children, and the Learning Institute

The symposium will bring new ideas from business and social media enterprise to a gathering of experts from the children’s sectors to explore how social media innovations and new thinking might leverage organizational or practice change in education and mental health. The focus will be on (1) the co-development of new strategies for knowledge translation and practice change, and (2) the re-interpretation of existing strategies that have been applied in one sector but have yet to be adapted for application in another. The existing inventory of knowledge translation strategies is limited and their effectiveness variable. The field must continue with further research on their effectiveness, but the pool of strategies also needs to evolve further. The venue will provide a much needed opportunity to look beyond our own disciplines and work environments to that we might learn from what others are doing elsewhere that may have application in mental health and education. Only then will we be able to further our success in bridging knowledge to practice and to improve knowledge exchange and uptake.
